{"id":330,"date":"2006-07-08T15:38:27","date_gmt":"2006-07-08T18:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fonz.net\/blog\/archives\/2006\/07\/08\/ebay-bans-google-checkout-why-even-bother\/"},"modified":"2006-07-08T15:38:27","modified_gmt":"2006-07-08T18:38:27","slug":"ebay-bans-google-checkout-why-even-bother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fonz.net\/blog\/archives\/2006\/07\/08\/ebay-bans-google-checkout-why-even-bother\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebay Bans Google Checkout&#8230; Why even bother?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ebay has decided to ban <a href=\"http:\/\/checkout.google.com\">Google Checkout<\/a> from it auctions (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.ebay.com\/help\/policies\/accepted-payments-policy.html\">Ebay TOS<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 Merchants will not be allowed to offer it as a payment service in their auctions.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Why is Ebay banning any payment services?\u00c2\u00a0 I understand if they &#8220;recommend against&#8221; a service if they feel it is unreliabled but they shouldn&#8217;t be banning anyone. It shouldn&#8217;t be up to them, it should be up to the seller and purchaser to determine which methods are most convienient and trustworthy to them.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>And if they allow other credit card processors in their TOS, why not Google Checkout? I&#8217;d trust Google Checkout before any fly by night online store&#8217;s website \/ shopping cart.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/jeremy.linuxquestions.org\/blog\/_archives\/2006\/7\/6\/2089282.html\">Jeremy<\/a> and many others out there say they&#8217;re trying to keep their stronghold on the e-wallet \/ auction payment market with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paypal.com\">Paypal<\/a>\n <\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"Jeremy's Blog :: eBay Bans Sellers from Using Google Checkout\"><p>I&#8217;d be surprised if either something doesn&#8217;t give or a lawsuit isn&#8217;t filed in the very near future on this one. eBay obviously wants to take advantage of the network effect as much as the can, but this may have crossed the line.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"citation\"><cite cite=\"http:\/\/jeremy.linuxquestions.org\/blog\/_archives\/2006\/7\/6\/2089282.html\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremy.linuxquestions.org\/blog\/_archives\/2006\/7\/6\/2089282.html\">Jeremy&#8217;s Blog :: eBay Bans Sellers from Using Google Checkout<\/a><\/cite><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think this is important because Google is banned, but rather because anyone is banned.\u00c2\u00a0 All of the non-paypal eWallets could probably join forces on some type of anti-trust suit here.\u00c2\u00a0 But I dont think Google will care.\u00c2\u00a0 Auctions are not the market Google is after. \n<\/p>\n<p>Google is looking to\u00c2\u00a0 offer value add to their AdSense \/ AdWords program.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think Checkout is meant to earn money on its own for Google, because they offer it cheaply and in some cases *free*.\u00c2\u00a0 Checkout is there to increase ad clicks, ad sales, and click-to-sale conversions.\u00c2\u00a0 And as an added benefit they get a payment method for Google Video, Google VoIP and any other services they plan to offer in the future.\n <\/p>\n<p>The cross over between Checkout and Paypal is tangential at best.\u00c2\u00a0 They both offer merchant account services.\u00c2\u00a0 And that market is already flooded, their won&#8217;t be much competition between the 2 services there. Google is going after a small part of that market, AdWords advertisers, just as Paypal is after the merchants in eBay auctions.\u00c2\u00a0 \n<\/p>\n<p>So while Google probably doesn&#8217;t have much of a reason to sue eBay over this, others might.\u00c2\u00a0 How long have these others been banned?\u00c2\u00a0 Have they attempted to fight the ban?\u00c2\u00a0 Has it hurt them at all?
