iBook Update 10/16/04: “No iBook for you!”

Monday, October 18th, 2004

So I continue to wait for my iBook. I spoke with Jeraldo at Apple Latin America (he wouldnt give me an extension or e-mail address), he basically called to say “I’m sorry, please wait longer.” I explained its almost 2 months now I’ve been with out an iBook and he told me he sorry about that and that Apple acknowledges that they need to fix the problem and that they will, but Apple has no idea how long it will take! I asked if they could do any of the following so that we could resolve the issue more quickly:

  • Test the logic boards before mailing them out so I dont end up with the wrong model or another defective board.
  • Lend me a piece of hardware so I’m not stuck without anything.
  • Give me a status update on where the logic board is physically. Heck, they wont even tell me if its on the boat heading here, stuck in customs, etc.

Jeraldo’s response was “I’m not in logistics I cant do any of that. I just called to let you know we recognize your problem exists and we will try to solve it at some point.” Basically saying thanks go back and wait in line. “No Soup for you! Next!”

This is not the type of service I have come to expect of Apple. They’re usually a lot more prompt and a lot more friendly / helpful.

Anyways, my case number on all this is: 41849877. If you happen to be from Apple and want to help me out a bit go prod someone in shipping! :)

    iBook Update 10/15/04

So I spoke to MacSoul again, and they’ve decided the problem with my iBook is that the new logic board is deffective. This means we have to wait on a 3rd logic board from Apple, it gets shipped from the US. I am pretty annoyed at this point. I asked MacSoul to e-mail me all of the case notes and Apple case numbers, etc so I can talk to Apple about this directly. They didnt do it on Friday, hopefully I’ll get them tomorrow.

After talking to MacSoul I called up Apple in the US. I got a whole lecture from tech support about how they cant do anything about it. They even tried to convince me I shouldnt be getting any support because I’m out of the country. Something about my warranty only being valid in the US. At that point I asked to speak with a supervisor or to customer service. 5 minutes later a supervisor in customer service was appologizing for the whole situation. Supposedly shes going to call their reps down here, MacSoul and a few other contacts and get back to me Monday. So anyways, stay tuned.

    iBook croaks again

So Apple *finally* got the right part down here and the service center took about 5 days to install it. I came by wednesday to check up on it, but guess what? They put in the new logic board, but now it will not boot. They thought the OS might be corrupt from all the improper shutdowns when it was hanging, but they’ve been reinstalling the OS since Tuesday afternoon (another 3 days) and have not had any success. They have no idea how long it will be. And here I thought I would finally have a computer / net access at home again.

So nothing special but I figured I would share. I’ve been listening to several podcasts lately and grabbing them all with get_enclosures.pl. I wanted them to add the latest files to my XMMS list like they do for iTunes. Anyways, here is a patch against get_enclosures 0.3.
